Diabetes type 2 is caused by the pancreas not producing enough of the hormone insulin, according to the NHS.
Without enough of the hormone, sugar in the blood isn’t readily converted into energy.
Some medications can help to keep blood sugar at normal levels.
But, you could lower blood sugar naturally by taking Panax ginseng supplements, a study has claimed.
Panax ginseng could lower blood sugar levels within one hour of consumption, the Northumbria University scientists said.
“These results confirm that Panax ginseng may possess glucoregulatory properties and can enhance cognitive performance,” the scientists said.
Ginseng is a herb that naturally suppresses appetite, nutritionists said.
It could also boost metabolism and help to burn fat at a faster rate.
Diabetics should speak to a GP before taking ginseng supplements, WebMD warned.
“Because ginseng may affect blood sugar levels, people taking drugs for diabetes should not use ginseng without talking to their doctor first.
“Ginseng can interact with warfarin and with some medicines for depression.
“Caffeine may amplify ginseng’s stimulant effects.”
You can also lower your blood sugar by making some lifestyle changes.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet and doing plenty of regular exercise could both help to reduce diabetes symptoms.
Diabetes patients are up to five times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, according to the NHS.
The condition can also cause nerve damage, kidney disease, and sexual dysfunction.
