Step through the interviewing queue at Carnegie Mellon University computer Science Career Fair, I see my students. Steve Young, one of the hundreds of you standing in the queue, told me, “I graduated with artificial intelligence and found a serious shortage of people with this skill. I’m sure you’ll have a lot of job suggestions.
I agree, knowing that you have made a career plan right. The artificial intelligence (AI) now needs to be used for a variety of products. From car self-drive to robot fabrication, from machine can distinguish cancer cells with cells often to smart thermostat, smart speakers are used in smart home… Applications that need an expanding AI have also created a shortage of “artificial intelligence workers” in every industry. Although many schools in the U.S. are opening additional AI training classes, the market is still lacking. According to U.S. government reports, the country will require 2.3 million “AI workers” decades.
“The lack of skilled AI has been working on the growth of the entire American industry”, a senior manager told me, “We have trouble hiring AI workers for the last three years, but here it is harder because many companies are competing to have these talents.” The reason is that ONE will change the entire global economy in the same way that the steam, electricity, or the Internet engine did in the past industrial revolutions. Many leaders speak of “industrial 4.0” without knowing WHO the engine is driving everything and impacts the global economy. But the pace of the change will depend on the availability of forces “AI workers” and there is currently not much.
According to the employment report of the World Economic Forum, within five years, the majority of companies will begin to reduce the number of workers and replace them with robots, automation software. The chief economist of a British bank predicted that 80 million jobs were automating within the next five years, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America – where half of existing jobs would be digital altogether.
There are different ideas on automation. Some believe and do not believe that robots will steal more jobs than the number created. Of course, no one knows exactly how many people will lose their job but I believe automation happens in many steps. First, manual work will be automated and then work with Office and other tasks. It happens whether you like it or not. It is important that you prepare and, if possible, change your job to something that has a better future. An economist writes: “I can see the technological tsunami that is pulling on, but the people on the beach still have summer opportunities without knowing that their lives are in danger. The fourth industrial revolution will have the unemployment of great tea and chaos “.
The global economic report said that there will be over 7 million jobs in the high-tech industry open but there are not enough skilled workers to fill. Every company is hunting for high-skilled workers, competing among countries as intense. This is the golden opportunity for many young people but the question is: How many people know this information and how many of them have skills to meet the needs? While millions of high school graduates are planning to get into college, how many children receive the right career advice to lead them to develop the market skills they need? How many of you will end the university with the “right skills”?
I think the urgent thing for the schools is to focus on training high-tech skills to prepare students to participate in the job market. How most students step out of high school already have some right skills right now whether they are in college or not. Before graduating from high school, every student must know at least one programming language such as Java or Python and know how to apply technology to the job. High school students also need soft skills such as collaboration, Exchange, and teamwork, as well as work ethics so that they can operate well in every position in the future, wherever they are. For many years, I have called for more classes in science, technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which uses more technology in schools and universities. Simply because this is the future.
AI technology is changing so rapidly that the majority of universities cannot catch up. Carnegie Mellon was the first university in the U.S. to train with artificial intelligence. The reason is that the foundation of artificial intelligence, Professor Allen Newell and Herbert Simon, is from here. Together with Prof. John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky from Dartmouth College launched the first article on artificial intelligence in 1955. Since then, many invented WHO have come from Carnegie Mellon’s computer science school including the first self-driving vehicle – Mars Rovers, industrial robots, and machine learning tools. Due to high demands, aside from good wages, many students usually have jobs for months before graduation.
In preparation for the future, it can not be later starting now by answering: How many elementary children meet the Reading standards in mathematics and science? How many high school students know at least one programming language? How many students get into the university with a career plan written out what they want to do and know what skills they need to learn? As long as “measured” is these simple data, we can break it up to the point of being able to act, creating improvements for our students.
The fourth industrial revolution has been here and many changes will soon occur. Change or not is our choice at this point. Continue arguing and spend more time on solutions to find solutions or act by retraining the teachers about technology to help them quickly teach students to step into the challenge ahead? Future in our hands.
